The SWS (BHS School Within a School) admissions process is now open! SWS Admissions Info Packet Please take the opportunity to see if SWS could be a good fit. School Within a School, located on the fourth floor of BHS, is an alternative, democratic community for a diverse group of approximately 120 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Goals for students include taking as much responsibility for their education as possible, sharing decision-making in running SWS, and contributing to building a caring community. For 50 years, SWS has provided students with the opportunity to participate actively as leaders in their own educations and develop meaningful relationships with teachers based on mutual respect. Admission to SWS is based on a lottery, the criteria of which are determined by the SWS Town Meeting. In addition to Town Meeting, SWS students take at least two classes in the program, including English. They take the rest of their classes in the mainstream of BHS. More information about the program, and the admissions process, can be found at swsbrookline.org. Thinking about a Gap Year?

STUDENTS Grades 9-12 - If you haven’t completed the Early Warning Data Panorama Survey #2, PLEASE TAKE 10 MINUTES TO DO THAT NOW! Several times a year our Early Warning Data Team surveys students on Panorama. Similar to the first opening days' survey, on this second survey we will ask you questions about how you think and feel. Your teachers, support staff (e.g., guidance counselors, social workers), and school leaders will be able to see your responses. There may also be times where we share your responses with your caregivers. Please respond honestly—there are no right or wrong answers! Please know that completing this survey is completely optional and your responses will not impact your grades. We anticipate that this survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. You can access the link to the survey by using the following link (https://surveys.panoramaed.com/brookline/login). When prompted to enter a code, enter which is the year of your graduation, last name, and first initial (e.g., 28DoeJ). Please email Matt DuBois with any questions about taking this survey. THANK YOU! Mr. Libenzon, BHS College Counselor, talked to students about their PSAT scores today during X block. If you missed the session, you can access it via this link:

Teachers will be completing progress reports (IPRs) this Wednesday 12/9 and IPRs will be posted on the student/parent portals this Thursday 12/10.
BHS counselors at both the OLS and 115 Greenough buildings will be present both in person and remotely in our hybrid school plan. Students will be offered a safe, confidential space in the 285 guidance suite and near the 9th grade counselor offices at OLS to set up zoom meetings with counselors and social workers who may be remote on certain days. space to remotely talk with a counselor or social worker. Students should contact their counselor directly for more information on how to set up these counseling zoom meetings while in-person at school. Various posters will be shared and posted this week with instructions about how to make appointments and also with QR scan codes that students can use from their phone to automatically connect with their counselor’s or social worker’s phone, email, or zoom office hours space. Dear Seniors, Juniors and their Parents/Guardians,
Some of our students have received either Koplik or Adams Scholarship letters in the past weeks. These awards cover tuition at Massachusetts State Schools. Please note that the “tuition” part of cost of attendance is just a fraction of the overall cost, so the typical award is somewhere around $1,500. The two scholarships have different requirements. Please pay special attention if your student received the Koplik certificate. In order to receive the scholarship, he or she will need to demonstrate proficiency by taking an AP or SAT Subject Test exams (additional details on the back of the scholarship letter). While doing scholarship searches with my own son, I’ve been very impressed with GoingMerry.com. It is a free service that aggregates scholarships and then emails you when a batch of scholarships are due. For example, Nick just got a notice that ten scholarships that could match his profile are due in December. I can now annoy him by constantly reminding him to submit the application. It’s almost December! Here’s hoping you and your family had some relaxing and healthy time together either in person or from afar. Students are well into quarter 2 with the midpoint being next Wednesday 12/9. Interim Progress Reports (IPRs) will be communicated by teachers on Thurs 12/10. Now is the time for students to makeup any missed work and to check in their teachers about their progress so the quarter 2 IPR can be positive.
This is also the time for each of us to be especially patient and kind to friends, family, others in the BHS community, and strangers who pass by every day. Almost all of us have some kind of challenge, struggle, frustration that is making our day to day life a bit harder to manage in these shorter, colder pandemic days. The little acts of kindness we show to each other are gifts that cost nothing. This is a short school week with Thanksgiving happening this Thursday. The school schedule will remain as is with Mon, Tues, and the ½ day Wed schedules unchanged. Only hybrid students in the Mon/Tues cohort will be coming in-person this short week. Please see attached schedules for OLS and 115 for reminders about blocks, including ½ day Wednesday blocks.
Happy and Safe Thanksgiving to all! While the focus of Back to School Night #2 onThursday 11/12 was on the classrooms and teacher messages, the BHS counselors and social workers wanted to introduce themselves too! The videos from these dedicated and caring student support educators from BHS are available below on our blog. Please note that generally referrals to BHS social workers should be requested through a student’s counselor or dean. Social workers are excellent resources for BHS students AND have very large caseloads at this time, especially this year with the more heightened level of mental health needs in our world. While they would love to have more availability, they are not always able to meet weekly with every student who may ask for this support. We encourage families to seek out mental health resources through the Brookline Center or their own health insurance programs. If a student or family needs assistance with this step, please feel free to contact the student’s counselor or one of the BHS social workers. Crazy but true- We are ¼ of the way through the school year already with Quarter 1 ending on Friday Nov 6.
Congratulations to all Gr 10-12 graders who started back for some in-person teaching and learning last week, as well the full remote students who are being patient and adjusting as teachers continue to build their teaching and tech repertoire! Lastly, good efforts from the 9th graders who have been continuing their hybrid and remote plans for the past 3 weeks!
