College Update for Juniors

3/27/2020

Dear Juniors,

First, please do not hesitate to contact me (or your counselor) if you have any questions, large or small!

I am getting many emails from colleges across the country assuring us that they are fully aware that they will be very flexible in evaluating our current juniors for 2020-21 college applications.  The message below is from UChicago, and I think it is a great summary of what colleges are thinking. I believe that it is exactly the message that most colleges would like to send you.
Below is the letter with my edits and notes.  Please read it when you have a moment.

College Update for Seniors

3/26/2020

Dear Seniors,

First, please do not hesitate to contact your counselor and/or Mr Libenzon (BHS College Counselor) if you have any questions, large or small!

Since many seniors  are getting admission decisions, please update your Naviance account: this will help our juniors with more accurate data and scattegrams.  Log in to your Naviance, then go to “Colleges I am Applying To,” then click on the little pencil “EDIT” button next to the college, and toggle the options under “Result.” Thank you!

Updates from BHS Counseling/Guid Dept – Week of March 23, 2020

Brookline High School’s United Minds learning platform is online at 8am on Monday, March 23. BHS educators and support staff have missed the students. They are prepared to do their best to offer enticing, engaging, and caring academic activities and support to the student community. As a principal at Gorham HS in Maine wrote, “This is about relationships and community and supporting one another to do the best we can with what we have.  If at the end of all this, when we finally set things back up straight again – [if a student] didn't do this and this, we will figure that all out together.  NO ONE IS GOING TO PUNISH OUR STUDENTS for doing the best they can.  No one is going to punish our families for doing the best they can.  No one is going to punish our schools or our community for doing the best we can”.

Please check out the guidance page on the United Minds platform. We are here to help and support every BHS student!

The student portal will be open until March 31 for all Gr 9-11 BHS students to upload their elective and wellness course selections. Be sure students can access their portal now since students only can be uploading these courses to their student portal!

Guidance & Counseling Department Info for Juniors/Seniors and parents-caretakers

3/18/2020

Dear Brookline High Classes of 2020 and 2021 Students and Families,

I hope you are all doing well, feeling good, and staying safe during this challenging time. As BHS counselors continue to await guidelines on our communications to students and families, it is important to share the following information and updates on college visits for juniors and accepted student opportunities now that more college acceptances are coming for seniors.

The BHS Counseling Department is sending this email specifically to address some college admissions items that have been impacted by the coronavirus. Those items are listed at the bottom of this email. We plan to continue updating you about things as we learn them, and will only share things that have been confirmed, with links to the sources of confirmation. This situation is changing hourly so we will always recommend that you double check the current status of any source we provide in case something specific changes since the time we shared it with you.

We also want to stress that there will be very few universal answers to the question “What should I do about X?” However, we can say that colleges and universities are very likely to be flexible and understanding about ALL aspects of the college admissions process during this time. That will undoubtedly look different for each individual institution, and we encourage you to check directly with the school’s admissions offices and/or webpages for their most up-to-date information about extensions of deadlines, changes in requirements, cancellations of events, and replacement activities or policies they may be instituting now. As you check individual college websites, please refer to this constantly evolving site for more information.

After reading the excellent book Dear Parents: A Field Guide for College Preparation by Jon McGee, I have focused on various quotes for each high school grade level for you to consider below. Mr McGee has spent over 17 years of his career “studying the influence of economic and demographic trends in college enrollment and how students make their college choice”. He includes his thoughts as a parent, along with shared “letters” from a diverse range of college/university/ secondary school leaders who are also parents starting to consider the post high school planning process for their own children.
