STEM Research Program

Applications for the 2023 Fall Cohort of the STEM Research Program are open. 

Led by PhD researchers, the STEM Research Program helps ambitious high school students work 1-on-1 with a PhD mentor to learn about the cutting edge in their STEM field of interest and produce an independent research project.

After weekly meetings with their mentor to discuss new STEM topics and their related research paper, students receive an evaluation written by their mentors.

Timeline

Week 1: Meet with your mentor and align on a topic
Week 2-4: Explore the topic and identify the research question
Week 5-9: Write research paper with 1-1 support from research mentor
Week 10-12: Make final edits and submit the paper for final evaluation

UMass Amherst Women in Engineering and Computing Career Day for High School Girls*

The UMass Amherst College of Engineering, in partnership with the College of Information and Computer Sciences, will again be hosting our annual Career Day for regional high schools. Our on-line registration site is open now for everyone!

Monday, October 30th, 2023
Lincoln Campus Center, UMass Amherst
8:45 am to 1:15 pm (lunch provided**)
Keynote Speaker: Jennifer Barno, BAE Systems

The goal of the day is to get students excited about pursuing undergraduate degrees in engineering or computer science.

Register Here! We will follow up with registrants about breakout activity and after hour tours options.

As a reminder/heads up:
  • Students are $20, but we don’t want to turn anyone away due to cost.
  • Please contact us with scholarship and/or transportation assistance inquiries ([email protected]).
  • We can't accept payment through Eventbrite (due to UMass policies) or even mention it (due to Eventbrite policies). We will follow up after registration.
  • Chaperones (teachers/counselors) are free but need to register for planning purposes.

Ladder Internships is a selective start-up internship program for high school students, founded and run by Harvard graduate students. In the program, students work 1-1 with supervisors from top start-ups to work on real-world projects in a real start-up environment. Our companies and supervisors come from Y Combinator, Harvard iLabs, Wharton, Google, Microsoft, and McKinsey & Company.
No prior working experience is required. The application deadline for the fall cohort is September 10 and this is the application link.

​The Harvard Undergraduate International Relations Scholars Program is an undergraduate-run conference for high school students looking to pursue a career in foreign policy. Featuring a range of professionals and academics, this equal-opportunity conference aims to reach students all across the world, of different nationalities, socioeconomic classes, and lived experiences. This program seeks to expose high schoolers to examining current foreign policy questions with prominent leaders in the field. Programming will consist of discussions with academics, experienced policymakers, government officials, and regional experts. Students will have the opportunity to learn real-world policy writing skills, cross-cultural leadership, and how to address global challenges from all sectors of international relations.

National Biomechanics Day @ Harvard

Ever wonder how we move from place to place each day? How we walk to school or run around a track? How we lift items up and put them back down? 
Welcome to the field of biomechanics - - - the math and science behind how we move!
You are invited to come learn about biomechanics and celebrate National Biomechanics Day with Harvard’s Biodesign Lab! 
This
hands-on educational event will include:
  • Touring state-of-the-art motion capture labs in Harvard’s new Science and Engineering Complex!
  • Learning about your body mechanics and muscle physiology, and the wearable sensors that make this possible!
  • Building and testing your own wearable device!
  • Discussing responsible research with current Clinical Research Managers!
  • Lunch with current graduate students!

No prior experience needed and all are welcome. Female and non-binary students are especially encouraged to sign up!

The YES High School Fellowship

The YES High School Fellowship is an opportunity for high school students to start their journey in the world of entrepreneurship. During this six week program, students will learn the skills and traits needed to build their own business while developing a network of other motivated creators. The time commitment is approximately two hours a week and multiple class times will be provided.
The program will run from February 27th, 2023 - April 14th, 2023.
