BLOG POST - 5/12

As the end of the school year draws to a close, us in Student Council and Legislature are rapidly trying to get bills voted on and passed, so they can be added to the handbook for the next school year! The two bills that we’re working on passing are:
  1. Supportive Measures Bill (sponsored by SHARP Warriors): As mentioned in the last blog post (this bill was previously called the Survivor’s Rights Bill), this bill gives any party involved in sexual assault/harassment the right to receive the support they need without being penalized. This includes the right to speak with social workers, guidance counselors, deans, and other staff, to be excused from class, to switch out of a class, and the right to request group changes in any class. This bill will be voted on at the next Legislature meeting, on Thursday, May 19 at 11:10 AM.
  2. Tackling Injustice: The Ultimate Hate Crime Administrative Policy Bill: This bill is continuing to be circulated around committees and councils across the Brookline Public School system. The bill is currently being edited by its writers and is on its way to be voted on after the Supportive Measures Bill, potentially before the end of the school year.
In addition, next year’s elections for Student Representatives on Legislature are just around the corner! If you or a friend is interested in running, keep your eyes peeled for Canvas announcements, and make sure you pay attention when the elections are announced in advisory.

We will do our best to keep representing the student body here in Student Council! If you want to know more about what we’re doing, find us at @brooklinehigh on Instagram or drop into some Student Council meetings, which always take place Tuesdays at 8:20 AM on B Weeks.

More updates to come!
