As we head into March, here are some updates on what Student Council has been working on during January and February! We had a busy and productive start to this new year by resolving committees we had finished working on and redistributing our efforts to new ones! As of now we have five committees:
  1. 18 year old absence policy reform:
This committee is editing the language in the student handbook to better give students the right to excuse their absences once they turn 18. Our goal is to keep expectations clear and consistent within the school community!
  1. Add/drop deadline:
This committee is offering a student perspective to a committee in BHS Legislature, discussing how late a student can add or drop a course. We want to give students as much autonomy as possible while respecting teachers and class sizes!
  1. Community service and school spirit committee:
This committee is reforming aspects of the BHS community that involve students, like clarity around how to get community service and ways we can bring the students of BHS together. Currently, this committee is working to create community service opportunities within the school, such as working with custodians.
  1. Grade visibility:
This committee is working to create a buffer period between when teachers finish grading all material and when report cards are sent out. This specifically affects seniors because these grades are the ones sent out to colleges. There are some inconsistencies between when a teacher publishes the final grade to when the grades are sent out that we hope to resolve!
  1. Assessment reform:
This committee is working to eliminate pop quizzes and enforce the policy that limits the amount of assessments a student can have per day. Currently, we are working to find a more concrete definition of “assessment” to avoid confusion around large quizzes and “quests”.
Thank you for taking the time to stay updated on our work. As always, we welcome your ideas, questions and feedback - Student Council is here to represent you! We are looking forward to continuing this work together as we head into the spring!
