Our Program
This will be the third year we’ve had organized squash play at Brookline HS. Squash had existed as a club for the previous ten years, but we have now been able to organize as a team with anticipated matches against several area public and private schools.
Practices. We typically have access to the five courts at The Winsor School from 6:00-8:00pm M-F throughout the season. With the number of players, we will have the courts for varsity, junior varsity girls and boys practices and matches from the first Monday after Thanksgiving through the end of February (excluding Dec and Feb vacations).
Equipment All players once cleared medically to play should obtain non-marking court shoes, court safety glasses, and a racquet. The best place to shop for these items is online through two known squash equipment vendors: www.squashgalaxy.com and www.holabirds.com The prices at these two sites are cheaper than area sports equipment venues.
Tryouts This year, due to the large number of players we had last year and with the limited court time throughout the season, we will have tryouts for Varsity and JV. These will occur during our first week. The tryouts will consist of three minutes of play against other hopeful players. Scores for these mini-matches will determine the ladders for boys and girls varsity and JV teams. We will again run challenge matches for players to advance up the V and JV ladders, and to advance from JV to V. To this end, all beginning players should know the game rules prior to the start of the season. British squash pro Nick Matthew has a brief (two minute) video that nicely explains the rules of squash. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gQsAKZ71tU Please check this out if you are new to the game or just want a refresher as a returning player:
Venues In addition to the our venue at the Winsor School, corner of Brookline and Longwood Avenues (Longwood Green ‘D’ Line), other nearby squash venues include the Harvard Murr Center, 65 North Harvard St, Allston (#66 Bus from Brookline), the BUS FitRec Center’s five courts next to the Agganis Arena on Comm. Ave., the BSC-Allston, 15 Gorham St., Allston, the Dover Squash Academy, Rt. 9 Natick, and CrossCourts, 19 Tech Circle, Natick. There are courts at many of the in-town private clubs such as the U-Club, T&R, UBC, and Boston Racquet Club.
